History

Picture
The Alexandria Animal Hospital was built in the early 1950s by Dr. Fred Nichols. Dr. Nichols provided the village of Alexandria with exceptional veterinary care, for both large and small animals, for over 30 years. In August of 1988, Dr. James T. Southard took over the practice, hoping to carry on Dr. Nichols' legacy. Dr. Southard started small, with very limited staffing and one exam room. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to expand our facility to be able to grow with the thriving community of Alexandria. We now have three additional small-animal veterinarians practicing at our clinic, as well as a full staff of caring, dedicated employees.

Dr. James Southard is the current owner of the Alexandria Animal Hospital, taking over for Dr Nichols in August of 1988. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 1982. Dr Southard preforms the majority of the surgical procedures at our facility, and also sees afternoon appointments. He live in Alexandria with his wife, Patrice, Golden- Doodle, Oliver, and cat, Lamont. He is very active in his church and enjoys mentoring young students interested in veterinary medicine. He and his wife have several children and grandchildren that they enjoy spending time with as often as possible. Dr. Southard is currently working on renovating the house next door to the clinic, with hopes of converting it into an animal surgery center. He works very hard to offer the best, most affordable care to the beloved pets in this community.
Dr. Anastasia Anderson has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 25 years. She graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994 and has been with the Alexandria Animal Hospital since 2004. She lives in Granville with her 2 yellow cats, Pippin and Rose, and her graying Doberman, Freya. She has 2 children, Aiden and Amelia, both in their 20s. Dr. Anderson enjoys spending time in nature, going rock climbing and bird watching, as well as spending time with her family. She is an excellent doctor who is very dedicated to saving animals every day.
Dr. Paula Jenkins received her Bachelor's of Science in Zoology with distinction in 2000 and graduated from The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. She has been a member of the OVMA since 2006 and worked at a mixed animal practice in Lancaster from 2006-2008. She started at the Alexandria Animal Hospital in August of 2008, allowing us to extend our hours to accommodate our clients' varied schedules. She has a Pomeranian mix named Tootie and several spunky kitties. She lives in Newark and enjoys live music, concerts and spending time with her family.  Dr. Jenkins is a kind and compassionate doctor and we are all grateful to have on our team.
Dr. Stephanie Samples is the newest addition to our clinic, starting in June of 2017. She earned her Bachelor's in Animal Science and graduated from The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. She lives in Sunbury with her husband, John, and 2 boys, Eli and Ethan. She has a cat named Kit-Kat and a dog named Riley.
